The Special Recreation Division offers positive and healthy recreation programming focused on leisure, social, educational, and vocational opportunities within the community for individuals with special needs with a team of talented, dedicated, knowledgeable and experienced staff. Programming also includes the largest south suburban community of Special Olympics in the state of Illinois with over 300 participants. Our special recreation staff is committed to meeting the unique, individual leisure time needs and positively impacting the lives of individuals with special needs every day by focusing on community outreach and re-integration.
We are currently seeking education, recreation and therapeutic majors and those who love to work with children and individuals with special needs to oversee our year-round inclusion programming that is committed to meeting unique individual leisure time needs.
This unique and rewarding position will be responsible for actively engaging in and providing general oversight for inclusion services through our camp services, aquatics, early childhood and general programs. Duties include managing staff assignments in an inclusive setting, acting as a lead staff member consisting of handling parent conversations, emergent transportation issues, sudden illness and maintaining staff/participant ratios. This position will be required to drive a passenger van (up to 15 passengers) to meet programming needs.
The ideal candidates must possess two to five years prior experience working with participants in special education/recreation, therapeutic recreation, recreation management or related field. Prior experience overseeing similar programming is preferred. Training in ADLs, implementing behavior management techniques and having knowledge of cognitive and developmental impairments is highly preferred. Additional qualifications include an associate's or bachelor's degree in recreation, education or medically based fields. Sensory or auditory specialization is preferred. AED/CPR/FA certification is required.
Hours may vary based on inclusive placement. Must be available to work M-F with possible evening and weekend placement up to 19 hours per week. This is a year-round position.
